Donald Trump fails to secure mar-a-lago.com domain name through cybersquatting complaint
Donald Trump and his Mar-A-Lago club have been unsuccessful in their attempt to secure the domain name mar-a-lago.com through a cybersquatting complaint. The domain was registered by Marq Quarius of “1 LLC” in 1997, and Trump’s affiliate DTTM Operations LLC filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution (UDRP) policy. Quarius defended his registration by explaining that he did so after the death of three family pets and even created a pet memorial site on the domain. The case failed because Trump’s lawyer couldn’t prove common law trademarks for the name pre-dating the domain registration, and Quarius had used the domain for noncommercial purposes for over 25 years.
